McCallie avoided a second straight year of heartbreak at the buzzer when Briarcrest Christian’s DeMarc Richardson’s 3-pointer hit the side of the backboard, giving the Blue Tornado a 51-49 victory in the Division II-AA basketball semifinals at Lipscomb University.
Cordell James’ three free throws with 4.5 seconds remaining put McCallie ahead. James was fouled on a 3-point attempt and calmly made all three attempts.
The Blue Tornado had trailed by 11 in the second half and were down nine to start the fourth quarter. They will play for the championship Saturday at 6 p.m. EST against the winner between top-ranked Ensworth and defending champ Montgomery Bell Academy.
