Red gowns ruled the red carpet.

Celebrities Jennifer Lawrence, Penelope Cruz and Sandra Bullock were among the glamour girls turning heads in brilliant reds at the 83rd Academy Awards last month at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

The awards show is historically one of the most influential trendsetting events of the year, said Emily Goodin, owner of Boutique Couture, a bridal and special-occasion shop in downtown Chattanooga.

"Designers use big events, especially the Oscars, to introduce new trends," she said. "I certainly take note of fresh ideas on the red carpet so I can keep those in mind when I buy for the next season. There were so many gorgeous looks."

Goodin said red topped her list of favorites when she tuned in to see what the celebrities were wearing. One wow moment for Goodin was the "extremely simple, yet stunning" red gown worn by Lawrence, a Best Actress nominee for "Winter's Bone."

Cruz wore a sequined L'Wren Scott, and Bullock's was a corseted Vera Wang.

Three other show-stopping colors boasted simple designs with minimal embellishment, Goodin said. Gwyneth Paltrow shone in a silver, liquid-like metallic gown by Calvin Klein. Host Anne Hathaway looked stunning in a royal blue design by Giorgio Armani Prive during one of her eight costume changes. Jennifer Hudson glowed in a bright coral gown by Atelier Versace.

The "detail" of these gowns was the fit, Goodin said.

"It's all about how that person looks in the gown," she said. "Although I am a sucker for an intricate design, I loved that simple gowns allowed the person's overall look to really shine - from hair and makeup to jewelry and shoes. No one seemed overdone."

The simplistic and sleek look will carry over to men's fashions as well, said Martin Nobles, manager of Belk at Northgate Mall.

"We're bringing back the fitted shirt and suit separates with flat-front pants and a fitted sportcoat," he said. "[The look is] simple and clean."

Nobles wasn't surprised by the influence of red for women's fashions.

"We did a big color splash of red back in the fall, and it's obviously a natural color after the holidays. But I've noticed how it has carried over through the first of the year," he said.

Goodin said designers will be putting their own spin on these Oscar inspirations.

"We should see examples of these hit the stores this fall and next spring. Chattanooga will see all of the trends. It's just a matter of who embraces them and decides to take a chance to make a statement."
