Walker approves 1-cent tax for education

Voters in Walker County have approved a renewal of the county’s 1-cent sales tax for education.

The so-called ESPLOST — education special purpose local option sales tax — received 1,124 votes for the measure to 139 against. Georgia law requires ballot item to receive 50 percent plus one vote to pass.

Voters in Catoosa, Murray and Walker counties were all deciding tonight tonight whether to renew ESPLOSTs, which are worth tens of millions of dollars for school systems over a five year period.
