Libyan rebels dismiss cease-fire declaration

TRIPOLI, Libya — A Libyan rebel spokesman has dismissed the cease-fire announcement, claiming Moammar Gadhafi's forces are still attacking key cities in the east and the west.

Facing Western military action, Libya's Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa announced Friday that the government will stop all military operations.

But Mustafa Gheriani, a spokesman for the national opposition council based in Benghazi, says "no cease-fire."

Gheriani says regime forces are shelling the eastern city of Ajdabiya and Misrata, the last rebel-held city in the western half of the country.

Western powers are racing to prevent more attacks after the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution setting the stage for airstrikes, a no-fly zone and other military measures short of a ground invasion.

That's right. Let's allow some Libyan rebel to get the US involved in a war.

Like a few Polish military and political idiots involved Britain and France in WW2, neocons and Obama can't wait to involve the US in another confrontation.

Want to die for a Libyan? Want your sons and daughters, fathers and mothers to die for a Libyan?

No more US blood, treasure, and interference in world affairs.

The US traded Taliban thugs for Karzai and his thugs. The US traded Hussein in Irag for sectarian violence and a destabilized Middle East. Now the US government wants to involve our country in another bloodbath?

There are those who don't remember (or more likely never were taught) about the bombing plot on July 20, 1944 against Adolph Hitler by German officers against the madness of Hitler. Isn't our "government" pursuing the same destructive idiocy?

In Europe the result of WW2 was trading Hitler for Stalin—one psychopath for another. Stalin killed more people than Hitler. Nice trade!

I'm not willing to kill one Libyan or be killed defending one Libyan, or Iraqi, or Afghani. Neither am I willing to spend one dime to do so.

Air-drop (without parachutes) Lindsey Graham and every Congressional warmonger who supports intervention into Libya first. Of course it won't happen that way but then they're not the ones dying in these illegal wars, but they don't mind you dying.

If those interventionist are willing for me to die to support their ideology perhaps it's time for them to be willing to die for theirs.

Who needs Muslim terrorists when we have US homegrown government terrorists?

God, Statel, you're such a whiner. Some valid points, but still, chill out. At least we don't have a president taking unilateral actions this time.

I hope the U.N. would act as quickly in cases of tyranny across the world, instead of allowing b.s. like this to continue as long as it has. My concept of "civilized" includes protecting people who are in need. Our troops sign up for the military knowing that they are quite possibly going to be thrown into conflicts that they may or may not agree with that may take their lives. Wouldn't you say that is their responsibility to take that into consideration? I haven't seen anyone drafted recently. Then, I might see more eye to eye with you.

Princehal, that would be "whiner", not winer.

Sign up for duty, Princehal, and spend your wealth and blood for those "civilized" tribes. Tell me when you've been blown apart how good it feels. It's worked out so well for the past 100 years of US imperialism.

harrystatel are you really suggesting that the world should have left Hitler and Mussolini alone? Do you really describe what the allies did in the second world war imperialism? I'm interested to know if you believe the holocaust happened.

Certainly the holocaust happened; Jews have been persecuted for being Jews for 2000 years (mainly by Christians and Muslims). (By the way, on April 19th, 1944, a few hundred Warsaw Ghetto Jews revolted against their Nazi conquerors and fought valiantly for over three weeks before being slaughtered. The entire French army when attacked by Hitler just lasted two weeks longer before capitulation. France is great at starting wars, but never finishing them. Remember that General Marshal Petain, a former WW1 French hero, ran Vichey France that rounded up Jews and others for transport to German death camps. So much for French "honor.")

But Hitler was a result of WW1 and the Treaty of Versailles. France, Russia, and England were as responsible for WW1 as much as Germany and the Austrian-Hungarian empire. For what? A dead Archduke. Dead, wounded, disfigured, maimed Americans for a dead ArchDuke?

WW1 was Wilson's folly. Had America not entered the war, Britain and France would have negotiated a peace with Germany and the disastrous Treaty of Versailles would have never happened. No Treaty, no Hitler.

Don't forget that Britain starved millions of German non-combatants by its naval blockade in WW1. Why was it necessary for America to enter that foreign war. I don't recall a German attack on US soil. The "Lusitania" was carrying war munitions to England and the German Navy had warned that ships carrying war goods to England were fair targets. But Wilson and Churchill knew that gullible Americans would fall for it, much as William Randolph Hearst created the Spanish-American War from an explosion of munitions on the USS Maine, not a Spanish attack. Hearst and Teddy Roosevelt couldn't wait.

Churchill, who never missed an opportunity for war (Boer war, WW1, WW2) lied and through his hatred of all things German, and his skull-duggery and cajoling of both Wilson and FDR brought the US into his bloody little wars. Don't forget it was Great Britain that first established concentration camps during the Boer War.)

Tell me how Europe was better off after 1945 under Stalin than Hitler. Both were psychopaths, murderers, and deserved killing. While Hitler killed over six million, Stalin killed over fifty million. While Hitler killed his "enemies" (mainly non-Germans, Stalin waged unprecedented war against his own people.)

Want a history lesson in US imperialism and the cost to America? Read Pat Buchanan's "Churchill, Hitler, and the Unnecessary War." While I disagree with Mr. Buchanan on many things, his research and historical understanding is impeccable.

For an excellent book about the horrors of war, there's never been a better book than Dalton Trumbo's "Johnny Got His Gun." Read that if you dare and tell me about the glory of war.

I do not support America's Imperialism in Iraq, Afghanistan, and now Libya. Nor would I go to war over South Korea, Yemen, Somalia, and all the other time-bombs waiting to go off in American faces when America sticks it plundering nose where it doesn't belong.

"Rich man's war, poor man's fight" is as apt today as it was during the Civil War.

I'm not willing to send an American to war without justification. And there's no justification for imperialism.

It is a Civil War that we or any other country has no business in. The UN is a waste of time and money, that we pay the most for, and sacrafice most of our soldiers for. The middle East is a real crap hole, has always been and always will be. It is ashame that they have all of the oil, as they can't manage themselves. Once we start to realize that they are the enemies of the world and are not human, we will become better off. Now of course Obama wants to stick his nose where it doesn't belong. I wish he would go and live with his fellow brothers and worship the idiot Muhhamad. We need to take care of our own problems and screw the rest of the world. We have no friends in Libya or anywhere else in the Middle East, they will all screw us in the end.

The U.S. must stay out of other country's business. Somewhere along the line we will still be attacked by those idiots who always assume that the U.S. is a valid target. (Remember the peaceful Muslims burning U.S. businesses in response to an incident in Denmark?) Deal with that when it happens but in the mean time I agree...not one dime nor one drop of U.S. blood should be spent on Libya.
