Chattanooga: Man turns himself in after fatal hit-and-run case

Monday, March 21, 2011

A man turned himself in to police today, saying he believes his car was the one that struck and killed a man on Dodson Avenue on March 14, according to an arrest report.

Troy Campbell, 42, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with a death or personal injury, the report said.

He told police he was driving his 2001 Jeep Cherokee on Dodson about 9 p.m. when he saw a "flash," the report said. He stopped to check his car, but he didn't see any signs of damage.

But over the days that followed, Campbell said he realized his car had been the one that hit 36-year-old Willie Pilcher, who later died from his injuries.

Witnesses told police that Pilcher was intoxicated and wandering in the road at the time of the crash, according to the report. Police also noted that Pilcher was dressed in dark clothing, making it difficult to see him.
