A Dalton jeweler was swindled out of $6,900 when a man sold him a bag of fake gold jewelry, police said.

Police are looking for a man that, according to the victim, identified himself as Dennis Black with a New Jersey driver's license, but investigators said the name could be fake.

The victim, who asked police not to identify him, said the man set up a meeting to test the authenticity of gold jewelry. The two took the jewelry to Southern Bullion in Bryman's Plaza for testing, where they were told it was 22- and 24-karat gold.

The victim went to a bank and withdrew $3,000 for the gold and borrowed $3,900 from a cousin, then gave it to the man.

Police believe the man switched out authentic gold for fake before giving it to the victim. When the victim went back to Southern Bullion to sell the jewelry, it was again tested, this time coming back as fake.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call Detective Ricky Long at 706-278-9085, ext. 168.
