Fortunately, Chattanoogans can fuel up at one of the city's many area coffee shops. Whether it's rescuing the bleary-eyed, hosting weekly gatherings between friends, or providing a sequestered nook for study, chances are there's a nearby coffeehouse that will rise to the occasion.
* Chattz, 1010 Market St.: In the heart of downtown, Chattz is the perfect spot to dart into for a pre-work caffeine boost. Chattz is run by the Chattanooga Coffee Co., which operates an artisan roasting studio and morning coffee bar at 2627 Broad St.
* Coffee Crafters, 426 Vine St.: Coffee Crafters is at the edge of UTC's campus, so it's a popular spot for students. The breakfast and lunch choices offer light but satisfying fare.
* Greyfriar's Coffee and Tea Co., 406 Broad St.: It's easy to lose track of the time at Greyfriar's, as its atmosphere is conducive to conversation and study. Greyfriar's has a full coffee and tea bar and a breakfast menu.
* Joe Friday's Alaskan Coffeehouse, 825 Houston St.: Owned by a family that has migrated from Fort Yukon, Joe Friday's specializes in Alaskan treats like the Solstice sandwich and the Avalanche smoothie. It's a cozy spot, with a great upstairs view of East M.L. King.
* Niedlov's Breadworks, 215 E. Main St., 3931 St. Elmo Ave.: Famous for its freshly baked breads, Niedlov's also serves a generous array of coffees and teas.
* Panera Bread: Whether you need a quick caffeine run or want to linger with friends over soup, there are several Paneras nearby. 417 Market St., 1810 Gunbarrel Road and 620 Northgate Mall.
* Pasha Coffee & Tea, 3914 St. Elmo Ave.: Situated in the heart of St. Elmo, Pasha specializes in Turkish coffee and offers a wide variety of other drinks - all of which are organic and fair trade. Pasha also serves Middle Eastern fare.
* Rembrandt's, 204 E. High St.: Tucked away in the Bluff View Art District, Rembrandt's maintains an Old World charm along with its wealth of fine coffees and teas. It also serves gourmet sandwiches, soups and desserts.
* Starbucks: Whenever you're hit with a Starbucks craving, you're probably not too far from one of many franchises in the Chattanooga area. 827 Broad St., 975 E. Third St., 5610 Brainerd Road, 2217 Hamilton Place Blvd., 1951 Gunbarrel Road, 1400 Patten Road and Lookout Mountain, Ga.
* Stone Cup, 330 Frazier Ave.: Stone Cup serves specialty-grade coffee, weekly roasted on site. It also has a menu covering all the day's meals. While you're there admire some local artwork or peruse a paperback from its bookshelf.
* Strouds, 1201 Broad St.: Attached to The Chattanoogan hotel, Strouds is a convenient stop heading into downtown.
* Windfarm Coffee Bar, 1427 Williams St.: Windfarm seeks to nourish community, with ample space for get-togethers or for live music, which is featured many nights out of the week. Windfarm serves only fair trade coffee.
