Trojans declared champs of Ooltewah tourney

Soddy-Daisy's Trojans won Ooltewah's annual baseball tournament without taking the field Saturday when the tournament was canceled due to the rain that began early in the morning.

"They were undefeated, so they won it as the only unbeaten team left," Ooltewah coach Brian Hitchcox said.

The host Owls won their pool although they and Bradley Central were each 2-1. Ooltewah gave up 10 runs in its three games; Bradley allowed 13.

The three wins boosted Soddy-Daisy's record to 7-3 heading into District 5-AAA games against Rhea County scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.

"It's always tough playing Rhea. We surely need to make sure we stay focused," Trojans coach Jared Hensley said.

He knows his offense has warmed up, though. The team had 19 hits and earned 11 walks in a big win Thursday when Taylor Dalton went 3-for-4 with two homers and seven RBIs and scored four runs. Dalton Rogers, who went 4-for-4 in that game, finished the tournament with 10 hits in 11 plate appearances and James Fowlkes had four home runs, including three in a 7-6 win over Dickson County.

The Trojans are scheduled to play at home Monday but that game could be in jeopardy if the rain doesn't clear out fairly early today.

"We had planned to tarp the field, but when we left on Friday the sun was out and I didn't want to burn up the infield grass," Hensley said. "We didn't get off the field at Red Bank until about 11, and I didn't think it was too wise to have the guys meet me at the field at midnight to put the tarp down."

Tournament host Ooltewah has its tarp down and Hitchcox planned to pull it this afternoon - if the rain has abated - when the Owls come in this afternoon for an indoor practice.

"I guess I'm more worried about what water got under the tarp. If we didn't get any, then we should be fine by Tuesday for sure," Hitchcox said.

The Owls are supposed to play at Cleveland on Monday and at home against the Blue Raiders on Tuesday.

Both coaches were getting some unexpected quality time with their families.

Hensley was watching "Real Housewives of Miami" with wife Laura but recovered quickly after admitting that to say he actually was playing with his son, Kale.

"We might go to the Aquarium or go out to try to do something fun later," he said.

Hitchcox's unexpected time at home allowed wife Erika time to run some errands and get a little time for herself, rare this time of year.

"The boys [2-year-old Braden and year-old Ty] are actually sitting in the floor right now whaling on each other," he said with a laugh. "But it's good to be home. I had not seen either of these guys awake since Wednesday."
