Thursday, March 31, 2011

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior Stephan Jaeger, a former Baylor School standout from Germany, was named Southern Conference men's golfer of the week for the second time in a row Wednesday. He tied for fourth along with Stanford's nationally sixth-ranked player in the Linger Longer Invitational earlier this week at Greensboro, Ga., where the Mocs were runners-up to fourth-ranked Alabama in a strong field. "Stephan is playing so well right now," Mocs coach Mark Guhne said in a UTC release. "he has proven himself as one of the top players in the country for going on three years now, and nothing he does surprises me." It was the third top-10 and second top-five of the season for Jaeger. He's 6 under par for his last six rounds. UTC plays this weekend at the LSU National Invitational.

Baseball

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Former Chattanoogan Anthony "Chico" Lombardo, head coach at Limestone College earned his 500th career victory over the weekend with a 12-3 win over Coker College. Lombardo, who played high school ball at Notre Dame and late went on to play collegiate ball at Motlow State and Francis Marion, became the second Limestone coach to reach that mark. Lombardo began coaching at Limestone in 1992, replacing Major League Hall of Fame pitcher Gaylord Perry as the coach of the Saints.

Basketball

Lee University's Larriques "Rico" Cunningham came up short in his attempt to earn an invitation to the State Farm College Slam Dunk championships, which will be held today in Houston. Cunningham was trying to earn the non-Division I spot in the competition, but Illinois College's Jacob Tucker earned the spot with more than 2.5 million views of his highlight video on YouTube.com.
