The former West Tenn Diamond Jaxx are having their way with the current Chattanooga Lookouts.
Chattanooga lost its third consecutive game Saturday night to the Jackson Generals, who became the new name of Seattle’s Class AA franchise after last season. The Generals (11-10) won 5-2 before a crowd of 4,518 at AT&T Field to move percentage points ahead of the Lookouts (12-11) into third place in the Southern League’s North Division.
The Lookouts had a difficult time against Jackson’s 6-foot-10 starting pitcher, Ken Kasparek, who allowed one run on four hits while striking out five.
“He has a good downward angle,” Lookouts 5-foot-8 leadoff hitter Anthony Jackson said. “So sometimes you think the ball is going to be up but it stays on the same flight. He did good tonight and mixed up his pitches.”
The Generals pounced on Lookouts starter Michael Antonini with three runs in the first inning. Rich Poythress had a two-run single up the middle, and James McOwen added an RBI double down the right-field line.
Chattanooga scored in the third when Scott Van Slyke doubled to right, took third on a passed ball and came home on a Kyle Russell groundout. The Lookouts finished with five hits and have lost three straight for the first time this season.
“I feel like we’re battling, but our bats aren’t coming alive right now,” said Russell, who was at the University of Texas with Kasparek and has faced him in intrasquad games, Single-A and high-A. “Our pitchers are doing great. We’ve just got to hit for these guys.”
Jackson had been known as the Generals from 1932 to ’55, according to the book “Jackson Diamonds,” and the city has witnessed the likes of Shoeless Joe Jackson, Casey Stengel, Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola.
“Most people aren’t aware of the rich history of baseball in Jackson and West Tennessee,” Generals general manager Tom Hanson said. “It dates all the way back to 1903.”
Chris Withrow (0-3, 6.75 ERA) is scheduled to start today’s 2:15 game for the Lookouts, with Anthony Vasquez (1-2, 4.13) scheduled for the Generals.
