Erlanger confirms child died from storm injuries, raising questions about number of fatalities

Erlanger Health System today confirmed the death of a child as a result of injuries received in the storm, raising questions about the total number of fatalities in last week's storms.

The child was from DeKalb County, Ala., a hospital official said.

Hospital officials declined to give any other information about the child, including gender, age or when he or she died, citing patient privacy laws.

As of May 1, DeKalb County's death count hovered at 33, according to official releases from the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department.

Stanna Guice, spokeswoman for the department, could not immediately be reached Tuesday afternoon.

In a release, Erlanger spokeswoman Jennifer Homa denied other speculation rampant on social networking sites.

"The rumor that there are unidentified pediatric patients at Children's Hospital at Erlanger with storm-related injuries are unfounded," said Homa.
