Seismologists say a small earthquake rattled Tunnel Hill, Ga., and the surrounding area early Monday morning. According to reports, the 1.7 magnitude quake shook the ground just before 4 a.m.
Tunnel Hill police say they did not received any reports of damage.
Geologist Julian Gray, the curator at Tellus Northwest Georgia Museum of Science, called the tremor “extremely small.”
“If you were even standing over it you probably wouldn’t have even felt it,” he said.
Minor quakes are not uncommon in the tri-state area, according to Gray. Most of them involve ancient fault lines that run through the Appalachians, he said.
