Mentone, Ala.: Woman, 65, dies when thrown from horse

A 65-year-old woman died Saturday when she was thrown from a horse in Mentone, Ala., officials said.

Kristine Burley Jones, of Plantation, Fla., was riding with her family at the Shady Grove Dude Ranch about 11 a.m. when her horse jumped, apparently having cut its rear leg on a limb, DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris said.

Jones fell, struck her head on a tree and appears to have died instantly from the blow, he said.

Jones was an experienced rider, he said.

"This is a terribly tragic accident. This family was here for a wedding and short vacation," Harris said.
