Seven seeking vacant Cleveland Council seat

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Seven people submitted applications to be considered for the District Five vacancy on the Cleveland City Council.

The applicants are Hugh A. Hodges, Dale R. Hughes, Harry M. Johnson Sr., Jonathan C. Porter, Susan H. Shelton, Barry M. Sullivan Sr. and Deborah H. "Debbie" Williams.

Hodges was director of the Bradley County Juvenile Division from 1984-1991 and is a U.S. Air Force veteran. Hughes is chairman of the Cleveland Utilities Board. Johnson was executive director of Bradley/Cleveland Community Services Agency from 1978 to 2009. Porter is a volunteer fire fighter, Bowater employee and owns a construction company. Shelton published The Bradley News Weekly from 1991-2008 and is employed at Cleveland City Schools. Sullivan has worked with area radio stations. Williams has served with civic groups and on a city school system advisory group.

The City Council meets at 1 p.m. Tuesday to interview the seven.

One of them will fill the vacancy created by the death of Councilman Bill Robertson until the 2012 city elections.
