Just as she's losing one standout from Austria, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf coach Colette Murray is getting another one. Michaela Gasplmayr, regarded as one of the two top junior players to come out of the European country this year, has signed to play for the Mocs, in effect replacing graduated compatriot Christine Wolf. "I've been told that she is a little ahead of where Christine was at the same age, so I know we are getting a player," Murray said in a UTC release Monday. "He junior resume is strong. She's won a ladies' amateur event and qualified for a Ladies European Tour event." Gasplmayr won the 2010 Russian Ladies Amateur at Moscow and missed the cut but shot a second-round 73 in the 2010 UNIQZ Ladies Golf Open. This year she has tied for eighth at the South African World Junior and 12th at the Austrian International Amateur. She joins Mette Kryger from Denmark in UTC's 2011 signing class.
The University of Tennessee softball team, co-coached by former UTC coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly with native Chattanoogan Marty McDaniel as an assistant and former GPS standouts Whitney Hammond and Tory Lewis among the players, is ranked seventh but seeded 14th nationally going into the NCAA regional it is hosting Friday through Sunday. The Lady Vols (47-10) will play Big South tournament champion Liberty (30-28) at about 6:30 p.m. Friday after ACC regular-season champion Georgia Tech (44-10) and Oklahoma State (37-17) meet at 4. UTC is facing Memphis in the regional being hosted by Alabama; the Lady Mocs are seeded second and playing third-seeded Memphis in their Friday opener.
Senior outfielder Leah Price from Rhea County and sophomore catcher Bri Shoemake from Ooltewah joined junior pitcher Mary Shealy from Carson-Newman on the NCAA Division II Daktronics All-Southeast Region first team announced Monday. Also making the team was Lenoir-Rhyne pitcher Dawon Millwood from Hixson, who beat Carson-Newman 2-1 in the South Atlantic Conference tournament final Sunday. Millwood, who allowed three hits in that game, is 27-4. Shoemake batted .397 with 11 home runs, 41 RBIs and a team-high 77 hits, and Price led the Lady Eagles with a .401 batting average and 30 stolen bases.
