Braly: Who makes the city's best cobbler?

The Creative Discovery Museum is cooking up a sweet event that everyone can bite into. Through the end of May, museum officials want you to cast your vote, letting them know which restaurant in town makes the best cobbler. It can be peach, cherry, blueberry, blackberry, apple - whatever you decide.

Then, on June 25 from 1 to 3 p.m., the top restaurants will be asked to put those recommendations to the test by preparing their best cobblers for museum visitors to taste. What a sweet afternoon downtown this will be. When you've tasted your fill, you will be asked to vote on your favorite.

The Best of Cobbler contest is part of the Creative Discovery Museum's ArtsLive, a year-round program funded through Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga and Tennessee Arts Commission that connects kids with visual and performing artists, as well, as in this case, the culinary arts.

Monthly performances and demonstrations by professional artists give children the opportunity to experience art firsthand, talk with the artist and even try the art form themselves. So, at 2 p.m. on the day of the contest, children and parents can learn the art of cobbler making in the museum's Culinary Corner.

"Who doesn't love cobbler? And this is the perfect time of year to celebrate this gooey, sweet concoction of fruit and bready crust," said Liza Blair, the museum's arts manager, in a news release. "Our goal is to extend the focus of the arts to include simple dishes, like cobbler, and provide a moment of delicious fun all the while embracing the domestic art of Southern baking."

Mark your calendars now for this day of tasty fun, but it's now time to email your vote to llb@cdmfun.org, if not today, then no later than May 31.

The following is one of my favorite cobbler recipes. And believe it or not, it is considered a cobbler. The name makes it fun; the ingredients make it delicious.

Peach Clafouti

Butter

2 tablespoons sugar

3 cups sliced peaches (or cherries, blueberries, etc.)

1 cup milk

1 cup light cream

3 eggs

1/4 cup flour

1 teaspoon vanilla

Confectioners sugar to sprinkle on top

Generously butter a shallow 1- to 11/2-quart baking dish, and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of sugar. Place sliced peaches in dish. In a blender, blend the remaining ingredients for about 2 minutes. Pour the mixture over the peaches. Bake at 375 F for 45 minutes or until top is golden. Sprinkle with confectioners sugar. Let cool, but serve when it is slightly warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
