A woman shot by a Bradley County deputy after she knifed him and stole his cruiser Saturday has been identified as Armetta Foster, 30, from Florida, according to the TBI.

Kristin Helm, spokeswoman with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, said Foster died from a gunshot wound rather than injuries suffered when she crashed the stolen cruiser at Harrison Pike and Third Street in Cleveland, Tenn.

The TBI is heading the investigation into the Saturday confrontation on Interstate 75 in Cleveland.

Bradley County authorities said Saturday Foster was walking north on I-75 with her two children when Deputy Dustin Patrick pulled over and began talking to her, Bradley County authorities said.

She pulled a knife and began slashing at him, cutting him on the hand, officials said. As she ran to his cruiser, Patrick fired his service weapon. The car roared away northbound but left the interstate just past the Harrison Pike bridge, crashing through the fence and hitting a tree.

Foster was taken to Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga, where she died. The children were placed in custody of the Department of Children's Services.

Patrick is on administrative leave with pay, which is standard procedure in shooting incidents, authorities said.

Helm said today that she didn't have information on Foster's hometown but the investigation is ongoing.
