MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Collierville scored six runs in the home half of the fifth inning and made the lead stick, eliminating Soddy-Daisy from the Class AAA state baseball tournament, 11-5.
Taylor Dalton went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored for the Trojans and Damian Dematteo had an RBI double and scored a run. Daniel Crawley, Jake Loffew also had RBIs for Soddy-Daisy.
“We should have gotten further, but this is something to be proud of, especially coming back to win our first game today,” said junior shortstop Hadyn Bailey.
The Trojans moved into the Wednesday night game with a 9-8 victory over Mt. Juliet, thanks in part to a five-RBI effort from leadoff man Talon Harris. The junior outfielder went 2-for-5 including his 18th home run of the season. The home run was a grand-slam in the top of the seventh as the Trojans rallied from a 7-5 deficit.
Teammate James Fowlkes, who has hit in the No. 3 slot most of the season, also got his 18th round-tripper, a three-run shot.
Their leading hitter in the come-from-behind win was second baseman Taylor Dalton, who had three hits in four trips, scored two runs and knocked in one.
Reliever Ryan Johnson, who pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief, got credit for the win.
In Division II-AA, Baylor went 1-1 on Wednesday, ousting defending state champion Brentwood Academy before falling 11-3 to Memphis University School.
The Red Raiders’ loss set up a Division II Class AA championship game between MUS and Christian Brothers with MUS needing two wins to secure the title.
Baylor exploded against Brentwood Academy, banging out 18 hits in a 10-2 victory. Winning pitcher Jeff Burke contributed a pair of hits and two RBIs, and Brandon Robertson and Zach McKelvey had three hits and two RBIs.
They weren’t so fortunate in their second game with centerfielder Taylor Maxey’s 3-for-3 and catcher Spencer Craig’s 2-for-3 accounting for five of their seven hits. Senior shortstop Will Cooper’s lone hit was a two-run homer.
