Man injured helping neighbor

An East Ridge woman and one would-be rescuer were hospitalized after a fire trapped the woman in her Superior Creek Lodge room early Saturday morning.

Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, according to East Ridge Public Safety spokesman Erik Hopkins. The woman was the only person in room 280 when the fire started about 1:25 a.m., Hopkins said in a news release. But neighbors said four others lived in the room, including a young child.

Fire officials confined the blaze to the room but still are investigating the cause, Hopkins said.

The woman's neighbors also were unsure of the cause, but they said the blaze created plenty of excitement.

"People knocked on the door and said, 'You got to get out,'" next-door neighbor Edy Salmans said. "You couldn't see in the hallway because of the smoke."

After the residents were evacuated, onlookers noticed the woman was trapped in her room. Two young men climbed up to her second-story balcony and smashed a glass door to free her, according to neighbor Kristi Beeson.

"It's just crazy," she said. "As soon as he bashed the glass, he got smoke all in his face."

The young men weren't able to get the woman down from her balcony, but fire officials carried her down a ladder when they arrived.

The woman and one of her rescuers were taken to Parkridge East hospital for smoke inhalation. Two other neighbors were treated and released at the scene.

Arrest made in April slaying

A man has been charged in the April 5 shooting death of Cordarrius Armour at the Okie Dokie Mart on Roanoke Avenue, Chattanooga police said Saturday.

Armour, 23, was shot in the chest and died on the spot. Friends said at the time that he had a history of confrontations with the shooter.

Police said they obtained a warrant for Tyrone Carmichael on charges of first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Spokeswoman Jerri Weary didn't provide Carmichael's age, address or the circumstances of the arrest, but she said he was being held in the Hamilton County Jail.
