DAYTON, Tenn. -- Germeil Daniels had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Brolin Floyd had 11 points and nine rebounds as the Tennessee Temple University men's basketball team defeated Bryan 66-56 after the Bryan Lady Lions began the Monday evening doubleheader with a 68-53 victory. Khristian Roberts added 10 points for Temple (2-1), which shot 52.9 percent from the field compared to 33.3 percent for the Lions (0-1), who got 13 points apiece from Dion Fair and Rob Riley and 10 from Anthony Moore. Bethany McArthur scored 15 points, Anna Thomas added 14 and Morgan Burnette had 15 rebounds with 13 points for the Lady Lions (2-0), while freshman point guard Mariah Britton had 12 points, four assists and three steals and Sarah Newton grabbed 10 rebounds. Jessica Salera had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Crusaders (0-1).
- The Cleveland State women's basketball team will begin its season at 5 p.m. today at Franklin Springs, Ga., against the Emmanuel College junior varsity. Veteran Lady Cougars coach Dan Lumpkin has 12 freshmen and new transfers after last year's team spent time in the national rankings. "It is going to take some time, but [the newcomers] are buying into the system and definitely ready to get started," Lumpkin said in a school release. "We need to get some girls healthy, especially Jessica Harper and Chelsea Jones who are recovering from knee injuries, but they are almost ready to go."
Volleyball
- Lee University signed Soddy-Daisy volleyball standouts Rachel Shaughnessy and Sarah Davis for 2012 at the high school Monday afternoon. Their commitments were reported seven weeks ago. Since then, the Lady Trojans wound up 53-11 and third in the state in Class AAA. The 6-foot-1 Shaughnessy led the area with 665 kills in 175 games and also had 151 blocks, 140 digs and 106 aces, while the 5-2 Davis totaled 1,001 digs (second in the area) and 105 aces. "Rachel is a dynamic front-row player; she's a terminator. She's very focused when she's on the court, and she works hard," said Lee coach Andrea Hudson, who loses seven seniors from this year's currently 26-2 team. "Sarah's a Church of God girl and contacted us, so I watched her play during a camp and was very impressed with her ability on defense. She's a go-getter. A little player on defense has to be quick, and she is. Both of them have had good coaches in high school and club ball, so I think they will transition well."
Soccer
Maryville College improved to 12-4-2 in men's soccer, 4-0 in the Great South Atlantic Conference, with a 1-0 win Monday at Covenant. Ridge Carter scored unassisted at 106:11 for the visitors, who outshot Covenant (7-8-2, 3-1) 22-15.
GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Morgan Shelton from Ooltewah High School ended her King College soccer career with her 14th goal of the season Monday, but Limestone College already had three goals and defeated the Lady Tornado 3-1 in the Conference Carolinas tournament opener. King ended its first season in the league 8-8-1 overall but went 7-3-1 with a 26-9 scoring margin in its last 11 games.
Golf
- OKLAHOMA CITY -- Lee University is tied for fourth place among 13 teams after Monday's opening two rounds in the River Oaks Intercollegiate men's golf tournament against a number of the NAIA's top programs. Host Oklahoma Christian leads at 559 with Grand View (Iowa) at 566, Oklahoma City University at 574 and the Flames at 575 with Our Lady of the Lake (Texas). Lee's Caleb Roberson and Hunter Vest are tied for eighth individually with even-par 142s, six shots out of the lead. Matt Emory is at 148 with Jeremy Lawson and Tyler Smith at 150. Emory began the day with a 70; Lawson closed with a 71.
Auto Racing
Edwin Wills of Dogtown, Ala., won the $1,000 first-place prize in the Foot Brake class Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. There were 49 cars in the class, and Wills won after six rounds of competition in his 1972 Chevrolet Nova. J.J. Foster of Dalton was second in a 1997 S-10, and Jeff Bryant of Collinsville, Ala., was third in a '68 Nova with Ronnie Birmingham of Fort Payne fourth in a '95 Ford Mustang. Kent Massey of Flintstone won for best estimated time with a 10.600-second run on a 10.60 dial in his 2008 Dodge Charger; he made it to the fourth round.
Maryville's Jason Welshan finished second to Crossville's Randy Weaver and then won the second race with Weaver second in Crate Late Model competition Saturday night at Crossville Raceway. It was the 28th victory at regional tracks this year for Welshan.
