Bryan stuns TWC in AAC semifinal

ATHENS, Tenn. -- The seventh-seeded Bryan College women upset second seed Tennessee Wesleyan in the AAC soccer quarterfinals Saturday despite being outshot 30-4. The Lady Lions (4-13-2) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force overtime and ultimately won with a 2-1 edge in a penalty-kick shootout. Abby Fannin assisted on a Jordan Hendrix goal and scored herself early in the second half for TWC (9-8-2), which had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks, but Carli Brown scored at 55:11 and 56:20 and Stephanie Gagnon made 14 saves for Bryan, including four in overtime. She stopped four PKs in the shootout.

• The Tennessee Wesleyan and Bryan men's soccer teams won their AAC quarterfinals Saturday, the second-seeded Bulldogs beating Virginia Intermont 5-0 with three goals from John Carrier and three assists by Pedro Alba and the Lions (11-7-1) whipping Union 8-3 in a matchup of fourth and fifth seeds. Also for TWC (15-4), Luke Winter and Garrett Koon had goals and Hector Jaramillo had two assists. Harry Sherwood had a hat trick for Bryan, which got two goals and an assist from Spero Dagnon, a goal and two assists from Sebastian Fischer, a goal and an assist from Tom Hemmings and a goal from Josh Beard.

• The top-seeded Lee University women's soccer team, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, began postseason play Saturday with a 6-0 win over Spring Hill in the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament, but the Lee men ended their first season under coach Paul Furey with a 2-1 overtime loss at Southern Polytechnic. Emeka Maduka gave Southern Poly a 1-0 lead, but freshman Noel Pimentel equalized for the Flames (11-8) before the Hornets' Diego Nicholson scored in extra time off a loose ball. Freshman goalkeeper Joey Hinshaw was a Lee standout. Laura Thacker scored the Lady Flames' first-half goal from a Jordan Woody assist and Jamie Achten scored two goals and became the NAIA's all-time career assists leader at 86 with two setups, matched by Kathryn Healy. Ode Fulutudilu, Amy Cochran and Darcy Brannen also scored for Lee (16-2), and Thacker and Rachael Nasralla had other assists.

• Berry College won 1-0 and 2-1 in a soccer doubleheader Saturday at Covenant. Rachel Leroy's unassisted goal at 55:59 won for the Berry women (11-3-1), which had a 12-8 edge in shots. Hannah Bales made four saves for the Lady Scots (8-8-2). Zak Wallingford scored twice in the first 29 minutes for the Berry guys (7-6-2); Todd Fleming scored late from a Chris Pifer assist for Covenant (7-9-2).

Volleyball

• ELON, N.C. -- Elon's volleyball team beat the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga 25-23, 25-23, 25-13 Saturday night, dropping the Lady Mocs to 5-24, 3-11 in the Southern Conference. Heather Parman had 13 kills, Bridget Camacho had 31 assists and Jennifer Kuroski and Melissa Green had 14 and 11 digs to lead UTC.

• Chattanooga-area freshmen Rachel Harper and Kristen Pickett had season highs with 19 kills and 57 assists, respectively, in Carson-Newman's five-set volleyball win over Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday. Harper, from Boyd-Buchanan, and Cleveland's Pickett also had 15 and 14 digs. Pickett had 50 assists and Harper 12 kills in Saturday's 3-1 win over Brevard, when sophomore Courtney Lawson from Red Bank had 11 digs for the Lady Eagles (17-13).

• JACKSON, Miss. -- Sewanee lost its three matches in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball tournament Friday and Saturday. The 12th-seeded Tigers (8-24) lost 25-17, 25-16, 25-17 to fifth-seeded Trinity despite nine kills and 16 digs by freshman Jamie Sue Wilson and 23 assists by classmate Rachel Schuman. Wilson had eight kills and Schuman set 17 assists in a 3-0 loss to Hendrix, when another freshman, Kayla Sewell, had 14 digs. Sewanee finished 12th with a 3-0 defeat by Centre on Saturday.

• Southeast Whitfield's Megan Collins and Jake Dickey were voted player and coach of the year in Area 7-AAA volleyball for the 2011 high school season. Collins, a junior outside hitter, led the state in AAA with 558 kills and added 456 digs and 66 aces. Teammates Hannah Graham with 870 assists, 315 digs and 66 aces and Carli Ledford with 404 digs and 62 aces also made the all-area first team.

Running

• DAYTON, Tenn. -- The Bryan College men's cross country team won the AAC meet for the third year in a row and fourth time in five years Saturday, and the Lady Lions were second to Milligan in the event hosted by Bryan at Fort Bluff. The Lions' Bryson Harper and Jason McLeod were second and third in the 8-kilometer race with times of 25:40 and 25:43, and teammates Connor Hatfield, Alex Stephens and Anthony Simpson also made all-conference by finishing sixth, seventh and ninth. Bryan's Madison Yates and Chris Pineda joined Hatfield on the all-freshman team. AAC coach of the year Rodney Stoker's Lions will run Nov. 19 in Vancouver, Wash., in the NAIA national meet. Alyssa Lindsay and Ericka Simpson were all-conference Lady Lions with seventh- and ninth-place finishes in the 5k, and Jessica Stockton was 14th and an all-freshman runner. Milligan's Gillen Giffen and Austin Ellis were the individual winners.

Field Hockey

• MEMPHIS -- Sewanee lost 3-2 to Rhodes in the SCAC field hockey semifinals Saturday, ending the Tigers' season at 5-10. Anna Morrow made 18 saves in defeat, but the Lynx got two scores in the first 14 minutes and another at 31:47. Senior Elise Landau scored in the first half for Sewanee, which was outshot 26-9; teammate Molly Kennedy scored at 69:22. Rhodes (10-6) plays Centre today for the title.

Football

• Alabama play-by-play radio announcer Eli Gold will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Gold will be discussing Saturday's showdown between the Crimson Tide and LSU; he also does radio for NASCAR races. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
