Sewanee wins for .500 season

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The tradition-rich Sewanee football program had not won as many as five games in a season since 2005, but the Tigers wound up 5-5 under first-year coach Tommy Laurendine with a 27-13 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference homecoming victory Saturday against Austin College.

The five wins were one more than the Tigers won the last four years combined.

Quarterback Lee Schurlknight sandwiched scoring runs of 1 and 6 yards around an Austin field goal in the opening 15:04, and fellow sophomore Curtis Johnson later threw a 26-yard touchdown screen pass to Andrew Keenan and scored on a 39-yard pass from running back Chad Morehead.

Schurlknight was 7-for-11 passing for 102 yards and Jase Brooks ran 10 times for 93 yards and caught two passes for 35. Chuck Winfield had three receptions for 45 yards. J.D. Crabtree and J.P. Boudreaux each had four solo tackles and three assists, Crabtree adding an interception, and Zac Atkins and Alex Head contributed a sack apiece for Sewanee.
