Lee star Achten national honoree

Lee University senior Jamie Achten was chosen the NAIA national women's soccer player of the week after totaling three goals and two assists in two wins last week for the second-ranked and three-time defending national champions. Her two assists on Lee's senior night broke the NAIA record for a career, giving her 86. The reigning national player of the year, she leads the NAIA with 21 assists this year and also has 20 goals. "She has been a fantastic player for us, and all of her accolades are well deserved," Lee coach Matt Yelton said. "As good a player as Jamie is, she is an even better person." The Lady Flames face Faulkner at 2 p.m. Thursday in Gulfport, Miss., in the Southern States Athletic Conference semifinals.

Auto Racing

* David Bigham of Calhoun, Ga., won the top prize of $1,000 in the Foot Brake class last Saturday at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. The son of strip Hall of Famer L.C. Bigham won with a 7.60-second run on a 7.60 dial in a 1968 Dodge Dart with a 440 Chrysler engine. Chattanooga's Melvin Croft finished second in the same double-entered Dodge in the class decided by a coin toss, and Darryl Goodner and Nathan Wells were third and fourth. Alex Crush of Sweetwater won the 5:70 class with a 5.73 run in a 1995 Mustang; Michael Davis of Cleveland was second with Mark Miles third and Josh Cunningham fourth. Gary Williams won the 6:00 class with a 6.01 run in a '78 Chevy Monza with Mike Parris second, Miles third and Rick Millard fourth. Dereck Pickle won the 7:00 class in a '69 Camaro SS with Lonnie Wigley and Ricky Millard second and third. Scott Millsaps won the prize for best estimated time with a 6.930-second run on a 6.93 dial in his '74 Pinto. The Tulsa Heat Wave "Funny Car" made one run Saturday, clocking 5.17 seconds at 161.25 mph.

Volleyball

*Bryan College freshman Taylor Fink was the Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball setter of the week after averaging 9.25 assists per set in two wins last week. The Lady Lions are seeded second as the league tournament begins today at the MeadowView Conference Resourt & Convention Center in Kingsport, Tenn.; they are scheduled to play seventh seed Virginia Intermont at 6 p.m. Ninth-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan opens the tournament against No. 8 Bluefield at 11 a.m., and that winner plays top seed Union (Ky.) at 6:30.

Basketball

* DAYTON, Tenn. -- Hanna Kaler with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting led four Bryan women's basketball reserves scoring in double figures in a 91-26 rout of Hiwasssee on Tuesday. Jenna Ray had 14 points and eight rebounds, Macy Kilgore had nine assists with 11 points and Kelsey Brooks had 11 steals and six assists with nine points for the Lady Lions (4-0). Cumberland shaded the Bryan men (1-3) despite 30 points and eight rebounds by Rob Riley and six assists and four steals by Dion Fair.

* CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Jessica Harper scored 16 points and Robyn Anthony and Brittany Ramsey added 13 each, Anthony with five steals and Ramsey with eight rebounds, as Cleveland State's Lady Cougars beat Snead State 77-44 in junior college basketball Tuesday. The Cleveland State men did not get to play Tennessee Temple's junior varsity, which had a scheduling mixup, but had won 77-70 Saturday at Chattahoochee Tech with Nick Ross scoring 36 points.

* Leah Frazier and Cody Houck scored 11 points apiece as the Tennessee Wesleyan women's basketball team leveled its record at 1-1 with a 62-44 win Tuesday at Tennessee Temple. Shayla Wilson and Jessica Salera scored 13 and 12 for Temple (0-4).

High School

* Danny Gilbert has been elected to the legislative council of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association. Now an assistant principal at Soddy-Daisy, Gilbert is a former wrestling coach for East Ridge, Ooltewah and Sale Creek.

Golf

* Summerville residents Randy Bowman and Ronnie Cargle are playing together in the championship fight of the 20th annual Georgia Senior Four-Ball tournament today through Friday at The Golf Club at Sanctuary Cove in Waverly. The first flight at the King & Prince course on St. Simons Island includes Dalton's Ron Lowery with Cohutta's David Mansfield, the Dalton duo of Chris Hall and Gary Cole and Calhoun residents Melvin Nichelson and C.J. Dodd. Calhoun's Virgil Waters is entered with Rome's Ed Mathis in the third flight.
