Chattanooga City Council committee agrees to work on new redistricting draft

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

The Chattanooga City Council's legal and legislative committee took a consensus vote today to work on a new proposed redistricting map that would have three "strong" districts with a majority of black voters.

The districts would be Districts 5, 8 and 9. District 7 would have around 50 percent black voters.

Council members looked at strengthening the minority vote, mostly black, in these areas after the vice president of the local NAACP expressed concerns that they were not coming close enough to a 65 percent minority voting block within redrawn districts.
