The woman who died in a crash early Sunday in Collegedale has been identified as Vanessa Smith, 49, the stepmother of the driver.
Michael Smith, who is in his mid-30s, has been charged with vehicular homicide, DUI, driving on a revoked license for a previous DUI and other offenses, Collegedale Police Chief Brian Hickman said.
He said Michael Smith’s Ford Ranger pickup ran off the road in the 5800 block of Tallent Road about 3:30 a.m. The truck hit a culvert, flipped and landed in an embankment, Hickman said.
Vanessa Smith died at the scene, he said.
Smith was taken to the hospital before he was taken into custody, Hickman said.
