Dalton coach Matt Land on probation for grabbing player

Dalton High School Coach Matt Land has been put on probation by the school for grabbing a player during half time in Friday’s game.

In an emailed statement, Principal Debbie Freeman said Land grabbed a player by the shoulder pads in attempt to motivate his players. She said the coach’s action was not directed toward the individual player “nor was his action committed in anger.”

Freeman said Land would be placed on probation through next year because his “motivational style in this instance was not in line with expectations of behavior for Dalton High School coaches.”

“I know that this was an isolated incident and I fully support him and his efforts with our football program,” Freeman said in the email.

I feel bad for the kid. Locker rooms are for hugs and the football is for cuddling. It's not like he was wearing pads and playing a contact sport.

Ok, here's my take for you manly men that relish the idea of their kids being beaten and choked by grown men in positions of authority. Ready tough guys? Get a god damn life and quit thinking that hurting kids makes you a man. Football is rough, and I love it for that. A coach is a leader, not a bully. And as far as me being anti-violence, here's the violent part. They would have to have pulled me off of this clown to save his life if it was my kid. I would willingly go to jail for my kids' honor and safety. THAT is what makes me a man and a father.

@XGSBoss where has ANYONE CLAIMED THAT he was "beaten and choked by grown men in positions of authority?" WHERE?

XGSBoss said... This link says he pushed the player to the ground. As do all other reports I have read besides the TFP bare bones report. I have also heard from friends of the players family that the kid was choked. No more or less reliable than the "official" report from the school. And it's a hell of a penalty for a dramatic grabbing of pads in my mind.

Interesting. The kids I talked to said he absolutely grabbed him by the shoulder pads but that he either lost his balance and fell over or tripped and went over afterwards. Could they be covering up for the coach? Maybe, but I've got no dog in this fight so I don't know why they'd lie to me.
