Courtney Shelton, Lee University team win BSC Shootout

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Led by medalist Courtney Shelton, the Lee University women's golf team stormed to the championship of the BSC Southern Shootout hosted by Birmingham-Southern College at the Highland Park course Sunday and Monday. That followed the NAIA Preview championship for the Lady Flames last week. They shot 289 and 288 on the par-70 course this week and beat second-place Columbus State, an NCAA Division II member, by 11 strokes. Shelton shot a 67 on Monday and won a four-way playoff at 140 with a 10-foot birdie on the first extra hole and a 25-footer on the second. Teammate Geandra Almeida was fifth at 143, and Kristin Bourg, Madison Alexander and Sloane Skinner were seventh, 10th and 16th at 148, 149 and 152.

Volleyball

  • CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- The Lee volleyball team, ranked fifth in the NAIA, ended a 23-match winning streak for NCAA Division III power Emory with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-18 home victory Monday night. Marija Zelenovic and Irene Ojukwu had nine kills apiece on 65 and 62 percent hitting for Lee (17-2), which has won 11 in a row, and Stephanie Todd and Lauren Williams added eight and seven kills with 50 and 43 percent success. Arlene Ferreira also had eight kills, plus 13 digs, and Gretchen Higdon and Kelsey Leffew had 19 and 16 assists. Breanah Bourque led Emory with 10 kills, and Amelia McCall had nine plus 11 digs.

Football

  • Tennessee State sophomore place-kicker Jamie Godfrey from McMinn Central High School was the Ohio Valley Conference football specialist of the week for his 13 points in the Tigers' 55-3 win over Southeast Missouri State last Saturday. Godfrey made field goals from 31 and 38 yards and tied a school record with seven extra points.

Auto Racing

  • Charles McRae from LaFayette won first place and $600 in the Foot Brake class this past Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. McRae won with an 8.35-second run on an 8.36 dial in his 1985 Mustang convertible. Strip hall of famer L.C. Bigham from Tunnel Hill was second in his 1974 Dodge Dart. Mike Griep of East Ridge was third in a 1976 Camaro SS with Gary Hanshue of Calhoun fourth in a '68 Camaro.

Running

  • Red Bank High School graduate Steve Fassino from Signal Mountain got the men's teams' Dr. Jack Chesney Award for outstanding community service at the University of Tennessee track and field and cross country banquet Sunday night.
