CALHOUN, Ga. -- The aerial connection of Taylor Lamb to cousin Ben Lamb has been common for Calhoun High School this football season.
Taylor found a new way to complete a pass to a Lamb -- catch it himself. Facing a fourth-and-2 in the second quarter Friday against nearby rival Gordon Central, Lamb dropped back, fired a pass, caught the deflection and scampered for Calhoun's first offensive touchdown in a 43-14 Region 7B-AA victory.
Calhoun (7-0, 4-0) is now in sole possession of first place, which it shared with the Warriors (5-2, 3-1) before Friday night.
"I thought our kids were physical and got after it, and Calhoun is ranked second [in the state] for a reason," Gordon Central coach Chad Fisher said. "We'll get back to work, and at the end of the day we're still battling for a playoff game in our region.
"We got after it and competed, and that was the biggest thing."
Clay Johnson scored the Yellow Jackets' first touchdown on the Warriors' first offensive play, when he intercepted an M.J. Reynolds pass and raced 34 yards for a touchdown.
Calhoun went ahead 15-0 on the Lamb-to-himself 6-yard touchdown pass. Gordon Central pulled within a touchdown on a 3-yard run by C.J. Bell with six minutes to go before halftime homecoming ceremonies.
The Yellow Jackets stung Gordon Central for three touchdowns in those final few minutes as the game became so heated that officials spent a few minutes talking to both teams.
Alex Urbano scored from 29 yards out, and Darius Washington scored on a 23-yard run. And the traditional Lamb-to-Lamb connection worked for a 15-yard score and a 37-7 lead at the break.
"We came out slow; then the offensive line gave me some time and opened some holes," Taylor Lamb said. "It feels good to get them out of the way. We'll get a couple more games under our belts and go to win region again."
Calhoun added two field goals in the third quarter for a 43-7 lead heading to the fourth with a running clock.
Calhoun kicker Adam Griffith, who has committed to Alabama, attempted a 62-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. It came up well short and to the right.
