Ladapo header wins title for East Hamilton, 1-0

Before their District 6-A/AA championship soccer match against Arts & Sciences, East Hamilton assistant coach Carrie Hill told Yinka Ladapo that she needed to pull an Abby Wambach, in reference to the national team star's ability to leap and score on headers.

While the 10th-grader's second-half header wasn't quite as acrobatic as some of Wambach's, the result was just as dramatic and delightful for Lady Hurricanes fans.

Ladapo scored on an Ali Fugatt free kick, and eighth-ranked East Hamilton held off the Lady Patriots for a 1-0 victory and the district title. East Hamilton (11-6-1) will host 10th-ranked McMinn Central, which fell 3-2 in overtime to Grace Academy, in the Region 3-A/AA semifinals Wednesday. Grace (11-6-1) will host CSAS (8-7).

"I've told the girls that if they were willing to head the ball, it would separate them from other players," East Hamilton coach John Millard said. "It's fitting that we did do that tonight in an emotionally charged match."

CSAS coach David Poss was happy with his team's performance.

"I thought we did great," he said. "I told the girls that I was pleased they played with the same intensity from beginning to end, and with most of our 11 starters playing the entire game, it was special to see.

"They did great tonight."

• District 5-A/AA: Grace Academy was tied 1-1 going into overtime against McMinn Central, but Emily Clark scored on a Liz Mouw assist in the first 10-minute extra period and the Lady Golden Eagles held off the Chargerettes.

Sierra Nunley and Holly Badger also scored for Grace.
