Israel's legal blockade

There was a lot of angry criticism of Israel in 2010 when a group of ships illegally bound for Palestinian-controlled Gaza was boarded and stopped by Israel. Violently attacked the moment they boarded the ships, Israeli troops had no choice but to use force, and nine passengers in the flotilla died.

Surprisingly, even the U.N. -- which is no friend of Israel -- recently admitted in a report on the matter that Israel's naval blockade is both legal and necessary to keep weapons from flowing to terrorists in Palestinian-held areas. Israel is regularly showered with rockets from those areas.

Not surprisingly, the U.N. called Israel's use of force in the raid "excessive." But the passengers' violent response to the boarding showed that Israeli soldiers had little alternative.

The ships bound for Gaza had come from Turkey, which is taking a disturbing turn toward Islamic radicalism. Relations between Turkey and Israel are deteriorating, and that has worsened since the U.N. issued its report declaring Israel's naval blockade justified.

But sadly, the threats to Israel's very existence make firm defensive measures necessary.

The Palmer Report to the UN, intended to help repair relations between Turkey and Israel, did opine the Gaza blockade to be legal. UN Human Rights experts however, have uniformly declared the blockad illegal.

More importantly, Israel is on the wrong side of world opinion and her actions, if continued, will lead to her demise. Nations don't last forever and it now appears that Israel's tenure may be unusually short.

Certainly the world would be a more peaceful place without Israel.

It is the right of every country to defend itself but it seems only Israel is critized and condemned when it exercises this right. Obamination aside, America will still be an ally of Israel and even if it were abandoned by us it wouln't matter, for the nation is still in God's plan. Who can defeat God?

If Israel has God on their side, then why do we (the U.S.) need to prop them up?

Oh yeah - big bad Israel is afraid of unarmed people and journalists on fishing boats who want to help starving people being mercilessly oppressed by the racist and morally repugnant policies of the State of Israel.

American support of this catastrophic injustice is at the root of the majority of warfare in the Middle East and every American soldier killed or maimed over the last thirty years there owes the AIPAC and neocon mongrels in Washington a thank you for their suffering.

The drumbeat of anti-Islamists and the propaganda about American troops "protecting our freedoms" over there are complete fabrications to mask the most shameful abrogation of our own principles of democracy. Principles which are being seen across the world as nothing but smoke and mirrors hiding the aspirations of a greedy, oil-addicted empire.

Your hatred for Israel is only surpassed by your appalling ignorance of Scripture.

conservative, your assertion that I hate Israel is totally unfounded and untrue! I have no problem with the Jewish people having a homeland. My problem is that we(the U.S.taxpayers) spend billions of dollars to subsidize a country which by all accounts is quite prosperous,of course I realize that this money is mostly for military expenditures, coupled with their own out-sized military budget and eats up an enormous portion of their GDP.(just like the U.S.) I simply don't understand Israels treatment of the residents of the West Bank and Gaza. They take their land, keep them near starvation, deny them their human rights, all in violation of the 1947 mandate that brought the Jewish State into existence. Maybe you could enlighten me as to which scriptures justify this?

He can't and it doesn't.

His scripture isn't worth the papyrus it was written on. If I lived there and the Israelis were doing to me what they're doing to the Palestinians, I would be lobbing rockets at them too.

Yasser Arifat's heirs are living the good life in Paris on the Billions this former leader of the PLO ferried out of Gaza...There own guy was ripping the Palestinians off, much to their detriment...Free and fair elections ushered in Hamas whose intent is the destruction of Israel...Like it or not, Israel is not going to allow the free flow of humanitarian goods into Gaza without proof that the crate of "canned peaches" is not a box of rocket grenades...
