And our Mayor won't get in front of the cameras and show leadership by telling the citizens that he is going to try and put an end to this crap. It would be nice, for once, to see the Mayor actually get angry at this gang warfare and give a strong message that he, as mayor, and working with the police department is going to do everything in his power to stop it. Get emotional for once Mayor! Instead, the Mayor wants to annex people into the city that don't want to be annexed. Talk about a guy with screwed up priorities. How about taking a stand to protect the people that already live here! Nah, let's just go spend $32,000 on a piece of art. Yippee!

I miss the good old days of fist fights and hand shakes afterwards. These scum bags that are going around shooting one another make me sick. I would say let them kill each other off, but I'm afraid of getting grazed by a bullet.

And just how is this the mayor's fault? People having been killing people in Chattanooga and elsewhere long before Mayor Littlefield was elected. None of the prior mayors was able to stop the killing so how can you or anyone place sole blame on Chattanooga's present mayor? P.S.--where in the article does it state any of this had to do with gangs? Or are you just ASSuming?

@ashleykc, this has nothing to with guns in Chattanooga. It has to do with crime and criminals. If every gun was removed off the streets of Chattanooga and every city in the nation, there would still be crimes taking place. I'm not a gun advocate either. I've never felt the need to own one, but let's be reasonable and sensible. In most all of these instances, the perps and the victims or some member/members of the victims families have some connection. Any fool who would bring this to his/her and his/her own family doorsteps need to be hung out to dry! Plain and simple! Even during prohibition when crime and killings were at their highest, the criminals had sense enough to keep their family life and their criminal activities separate. These idiots today will carry on criminal activities right from their homes, where children are present.

The US has chosen to embrace gun ownership and with that comes a growing use of those guns. Violence begets violence.

Guns and violence are on a long-term growth curve in the US...self-inflicted madness.

With all those crazed, drooling, wildeyed Concealed Carry Permit holders that the TFP and its anti-gun wingnut readers claim are running amok in our city, all those victims and the shooters must have CCPs, right? Those carry fiends must be at fault, right? After all, according to the TFP, those crazies kill maybe TWO people a year so it must be them, right?

Yeah, right.

Actually, jess, the POLICE have already been let loose and allowed to do what they KNOW to do*, and it only caused the violence to escalate. As it became more difficult to distinguish the good guys from the bad when the so-called good guys become caught up in engaging in criminal activities themselves.

Yep jesse! Y'all sho' nuff did y'alls fair share taking part in criminal activities in those days. A lot of citizens disappeared under y'alls watch back then, never to be heard from again. In fact, it was those criminal minded cops in those days that gave life to the so-called gangs we're dealing with now. They originally formed as a means to protect themselves and their communities from rogue, corrupted police forces around the country. Remember: Serpico? That was on the tip of the iceberg in dealing with corrupt, brutal cops on the beat.

It isn't as if America hasn't historically sunken to new lows douring periods of strife, social and economic problems. Sinking to new lows is a part of the very fabric for some. It's considered a birthright. Some have said Hitler got his inspiration after studying American history extensively and its targeting of certain ethnic, classes and racial groups to blame for its many woes and failures.

Really now joneses, are you really that dense and stupid? Of course you're playing the race card here in suggesting such an idiotic thing. But I'll bite! Actually, the vast majority of Obama voters were white. But what any of this has to do with Obama is beyond me. I thought we'd all moved beyond that race thing in the 21st century. I'll ask again, what do you suggest the mayor do? Placing more police on the streets hasn't solved anything except to lead to more police brutality against innocent citizens which has actually led to more violence on the streets. Try again.

01centare, so again you are showing us exactly what a real idiot you are. You are the one bringing race into the picture. 95% of the voting blacks voted for Obama so one can assume the blacks are Obama supporters. Do the math stupid. More police has lead to more police brutallity? What a stupid thing to say. Are you that dense? More crime has made the police more vigilante. You sound like one of those bleeding heart liberals that think these murderers are victims. These murderers need to be brutalized because doing nothing apparently is not working. People like you are part of the problem. But I will give you one thing, this mayor is not capable of doing anything as he has not the courage or leadership qualities to stop these murders you and people like you are willing to accept as just a way of life. You are a fool and should be ashamed of yourself.

Okay, some questions: Where was the toddler and the 17 year old? Were they out on the street after 9pm on a Sunday? Why? If so, where were their parents? As for the rest, common sense these days points to "not hanging out" after dark anymore-I am not blaming the victims here-whoever shot at them deserves what he gets, but I still see this as a "responsibility of the community"-starting with parenting-real parenting at home and the community standing up against thuggery-it's totally out of control- yes, the City Council needs to re-prioritize-instead of spending money on art (which is a nice thing) to attract tourists is backwards logic- who's gonna want to come here and dodge bullets while looking at a giant pull toy?

OK so some are blaming Mayor Littlefield because there aren't enough police on the street. Where is he going to get the money to pay for the additional police? Just the other day the Republicans in the Senate voted to filibuster President Obama's jobs bill that would have provided funds for additional police, firefighters and teachers. This was going to be paid for with a 1/2 of 1 percent increase in taxes on millionaires. But the Repubs said NO. They have taken a pledge to Grover Norquist instead of the American People to not raise taxes on the rich. They don't want a jobs bill and they aren't interested in having the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes. Instead of blaming Mayor Littlefield for the lack of police officers ask Chuck Fleischman how he voted in the House of Reps. to provide for his constituents. After all the last time I checked Walker St. was in the Third Congressional District. Ask Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander why they voted to filibuster the jobs bill. AT least JoAnn Favors knows where Walker Street is, I doubt Chuck Fleischman has ever been to that part of town. He has managed to stay away from any place where he might be challenged or debated on the issues(like jobs) that matter most to his constituents. Instead he's only interested in bringing John Bohener to town to fatten his campaign chest. I'm still wondering when Chuckie is going to create all those jobs he supposedly knew how to create when he was campaigning. Maybe if there were more jobs available there would be less violence.

Momus, you are right and these murderers should not be voting as they lack the intelligence to make an educated decision on what is best for this country. Thank God for Voter ID as it will weed out the idiots that would have voted for the idiots.

Ibshame, the Republicans and some dummycrats voted against this jobs bill because it spends almost another 500 billion dollars we do not have. If this fool we have as president was serious about police on the streets he would have included it in the trillion dollar stimulus package he already spent. By the way what did he pend that trillion dollars on? Oh yeah obama never did tell us. so much for transparency.

No, the jobs bill was to be paid for with a 1/2 of 1% increase in taxes on millionaires. Of course even that was too much for Repubs to go along with because after all they made a pledge to Grover Norquist they wouldn't raise taxes no matter what. I remember when George H.W. Bush was running for President and he made the "READ MY LIPS PLEDGE OF NO NEW TAXES" it didn't take long for him to realize Reagan had run up so much debt until raising taxes was the only option he had unless he wanted to bankrupt the country. But this bunch of Repubs in Congress are not worried about the average Joe out there who is looking for work or the teachers, firefighters and police needed in our communities, no their number one priority is making sure Barack Obama is not re-elected and if it means the rest of the country goes to hell in a handbasket so be it.
All of this fear mongering on the part of Repubs about Spending reminds me once again of their fear campaign in 2002 when anyone who wanted to run for office had to prove he/she was a good loyal patriot by supporting Bush's march to war in Iraq. If you didn't think Saddam Hussein was connected to 9/11 and out to explode mushroom clouds over the U.S. then at the very least you were not a PATRIOT and you were somehow aiding and abetting the enemies of the U.S. if you raised doubts about the invasion. Good people were shuned from office and portrayed as traitors or enemy-friendly. Max Clelland a wounded decorated veteran was portrayed as being on the side of Osama Bin Laden because he questioned whether going into Iraq was the right thing to do. He lost his seat in the Senate to a campaign based on distortion and lies. All of the fear mongering and all of the questioning of people's patriotism got Bush a Republican controlled House of Reps and a Republican controlled Senate. And in the end what did the American people get? Two wars that cost billions of dollars, over 4000 dead U.S. soldiers, over 30,000 wounded soldiers and the U.S. so deep in debt until we were just short of having a Depression the likes of which had never been seen before in the U.S.
So when you speak of idiots voting for idiots and how the voter ID bill will protect against that, I say not if the same idiots who voted for Bush twice are still allowed to vote for anyone of the current crop of Repub candidates running for President.
