Stepping out n New opportunities for volunteers

AMERICAN RED CROSS

  • Opportunities: Volunteers needed for disaster response, health and safety instructors and service to the Armed Forces. Free training.

  • Hospital: Help patients and their families in area hospitals one day a week.

  • HR Department: Help with data entry, class setups, stuffing envelopes and filing. Some lifting of boxes required.

  • Fundraising and Special Events: Help with planning. 265-3455.

Partnership for Families, Children and Adults

  • Dogwood Shop: Someone with retail experience or who enjoys meeting people needed to staff shop. 697-3830.

SALVATION ARMY

  • Disaster Response: Assist with emergency food service, shelter management; free training.

  • Homeless Shelter: Help clients with shelter upkeep and outreach programs.

  • Social Service: Assist caseworkers with client interviews, data entry, food pantry management and other duties.

  • Thrift Store Assistant: Sort donations, supply customer service at thrift stores.

TENNESSEE RIVER RESCUE

  • Event Workers: Pick up debris along Spring Creek in East Ridge and help remove it from site. Saturday, Oct. 1, 9 a.m.-noon; meet at city of East Ridge garage, 1015 Yale Street. Bring work gloves. Volunteers receive T-shirt, snacks. Register with Larry Clark, 443-1806.

UNITED WAY VOLUNTEER CENTER

  • Chattanooga Area Food Bank: Help assemble emergency food boxes for families, one day a week for two hours between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday. 622-1800

  • Chattanooga Cares: Drive clients to medical appointments or grocery store; must be 18 or older, have valid driver's license, be insured and use own vehicle.

  • Foster Grandparent Program: Serve 20 hours per week mentoring special and exceptional-needs children, ages infants to 21; must be 55 or older and meet low-income eligibility levels. Volunteers serve in day-care centers, mentoring sites, schools, hospitals and Head Start centers.
