NASHVILLE - Tennessee Regulatory Authority Chairman Eddie Roberson is stepping down from the agency after spending 36 years there, working his way up from staffer to director.

Roberson, 58, who grew up in Chattanooga, submitted his resignation letter Monday to Gov. Bill Haslam. It was posted on the agency's website earlier today.

"After much thought and prayer, I have decided to submit my resignation effective October 1, 2011, as director of the Tennessee Regulatory Authority (TRA). For over 36 years it has been my distinct honor and high privilege to serve the citizens of our great State on the Public Service Commission and TRA," he wrote.

Over the course of nearly four decades, Roberson said, "a sea of change has occurred in the field of utility regulation and I believe the TRA has navigated well through these changing times."

Throughout his career, he said, "my guiding star has been to conduct myself in a manner that brings honor to my God, family and State. In all decisions, I have attempted to promote the public interest regardless of how following that high principle could affect me personally."
