University of Tennessee at Chattanooga coach Russ Huesman met with the Mocs media Tuesday and discussed a range of topics, from the latest rankings to how much coaches yell at one another to Saturday's game at Eastern Kentucky.
Here's some of what he had to say:
On the status of defensive tackle Nick Davison, who suffered a knee injury in last week's win over Jacksonville State ...
"Probably not going to play this week. We'll see how he progresses. It wasn't as bad as we originally thought, so that was good news. If he doesn't play this week we'll go into next week seeing how he's doing with his rehab and we'll make a decision at that point in time.
"He won't play this week."
On the play of the defense vs. JSU, which managed just 17 yards of offense in the second half ...
"I think our guys kind of got going a little bit. We got some momentum defensively and that's what good defenses do - once you see a little bit of blood in the water there, you go and get it and attack."
On his shouting match with offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield late in the first half after some poor clock management ...
"[Quarterback B.J. Coleman] was breaking up a fight out there right before the half between me and Satterfield. We were about to fist-fight out there and B.J. [was like], 'Whoa, coaches, settle down here now, fellas.' He was cool, calm and collected." ...
"I wasn't real happy with how it happened [the clock management] and Satt wasn't real happy with how it happened and we just started screaming and yelling." ...
"Now that you've won the game it was pretty funny, but if we wouldn't have won the game it wouldn't be funny right now."
Huesman went on to say that people would be shocked at how much yelling coaches do at one another during a game, but that they always leave it on the field ...
"Everywhere I've ever been we yell and scream. ... Game's over, man, we're hugging and high-fiving and best of buddies. But during the game everybody hates everybody." ...
"The bottom line is, if you take it off the field you're not a very good coach. If you take anything that happens during the course of that game with you off the field, you're a pitiful coach. You have to separate what happens during those 60 minutes with what happens in the office here, in your social life, in your day-to-day interaction with your staff."
On Jacksonville State being ranked No. 16 in the FCS coaches' poll, one spot ahead of UTC despite the Mocs' 38-17 win last Saturday ...
"I didn't put Jacksonville State in front of us because I didn't think they deserved [to be], but I think I kept them in the top 15. I think I put them one spot behind us."
On EKU quarterback T.J. Pryor, who will be the third mobile QB UTC has faced in as many games ...
"I think the difference in this one than the other ones [Nebraska's Taylor Martinez and Jacksonville State's Coty Blanchard] is I think this one can really throw it. You guys saw him last week against us, he's got a live arm, he's accurate and I think that makes him so much more dangerous. I think he's a thrower with the ability to escape and get out of trouble, whereas I think Martinez and Blanchard were runners that threw the ball OK."
