Man charged with groping girl
A 67-year-old man faces charges of simple assault and aggravated sexual battery after a 12-year-old girl reported he grabbed her breasts, according to Hamilton County Sheriff's Office arrest report.
The girl was selling items for a school fundraiser when she approached the residence at 10155 Bear Trail in Soddy-Daisy.
Manning Brooks Mahaffee Sr. told her he only had $100 and she would have to get him change. The girl went to other homes, and he called her back.
He reportedly grabbed the girl's arm and breasts after she stepped inside, according to the report. When she tried to leave, he tried to pull her back in, according to a statement issued by Janice Atkinson, sheriff's office spokeswoman. The girl ran to tell her mother what happened.
When Mahaffee was interviewed by police, he said he didn't mean to grab the girl or hurt her.
Mahaffee posted a $15,000 bond. He declined to comment Thursday afternoon.
Deputy chases burglary suspects
Two men were arrested Thursday after leading a Hamilton County sheriff's deputy on a chase on Lee Highway.
Lekell Byrd and Damico Lawrence, both 20, were both charged with burglary, evading arrest and two counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle.
The pair were seen in a Dodge Avenger that matched the description of a car seen at a burglary earlier in the morning at 4225 Shady Oaks Drive, Hamilton County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Janice Atkinson said in a statement.
Deputy George Delker tried to stop the vehicle, but the men accelerated through neighborhoods, Atkinson said.
On Lee Highway, the driver used the car to hit Delker's vehicle, until eventually they were stopped at the St. Stephens Road intersection, she said.
