Man dies in fall from bluff on Sewanee Mountain in Franklin County

A 50-year-old Pennsylvania man died Saturday after falling from a bluff on Sewanee Mountain in Franklin County, according to authorities.

Chris Guess, spokesman for the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, said the man, identified as Eric J. Petrilla, of 310 8th Street, Windber, Pa., tripped and fell about 50 feet from the top of a large bluff along the side of U.S. Highway 41-A about 6:42 p.m. CST.

Personnel from Sewanee Fire and Rescue and Grundy County Emergency Management hauled Petrilla from the site where he fell to an ambulance which transported him to Emerald Hodgson Hospital in Sewanee, Guess aid. Then he was taken by helicopter to Erlanger Health System in Chattanooga, according to Guess.

Guess said officials learned a short time later that Petrilla had died of his injuries.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the accident, Guess said.
