Three middle school students were transferred to the Juvenile Detention center this morning after they set off a homemade explosive device in Lake Forest Middle School's cafeteria, Bradley County Sheriff's Office officials say.

Sheriff's spokesman Bob Gault said two students brought household chemicals and a plastic soft drink bottle to school. They combined the items in the bottle around 9:30 a.m. and gave it to a third student, who tossed it into a trash container. The device exploded with "a loud boom and small release of smoke," Gault said.

No students, faculty members or cafeteria workers were injured, Gault said.

School Resource Officers and school administrators quickly identified those involved as two 14-year-old students and one 15-year-old student.

The students told investigators they learned about the device in a YouTube video, Gault said.

All three have been charged with possession of a weapon on school property and reckless endangerment.
