Grundy County authorities released few details Wednesday about a criminal homicide charge leveled last month in the shooting death of a 26-year-old man.

Daniel Clay McDaniel, 24, of 4140 Colony Road in Gruetli-Laager, Tenn., was charged in the March 22 slaying of Joshua Wade Stevens, according to records and officials.

Sheriff Brent Myers was unavailable Wednesday for comment and other officials declined to discuss details of the case.

Court documents obtained by the Chattanooga Times Free Press state that McDaniel is accused of shooting Stevens several times in the chest and abdomen about 9:49 p.m. CDT in Gruetli-Laager.

Myers was the first officer to arrive on the scene, where he determined McDaniel had killed Stevens with a 9 mm pistol, according to documents filed in the Grundy County General Sessions Court. Myers was responding to a call placed by a woman who reported that someone "had been shot and killed" at the residence, records state.

McDaniel was detained while Myers performed CPR on Stevens in an attempt to revive him, records state.

"[McDaniel] was transported to Emerald Hodgeson Hospital where he was later pronounced dead," Myers states in the court document.

TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm said Wednesday that the state agency has not been asked to assist in the investigation.

Officials at the 12th Judicial District Attorneys Office said McDaniel faces a preliminary hearing on May 15.
