McCallie winner in Optimist meet

McCallie's track and field team won the boys' title in the annual Optimist Meet held Friday night at Walker Valley, beating second-place Baylor 131-76.5. Iman Isang scored 22 points to lead the Blue Tornado, winning the 110-meter hurdles and finishing third in the 300 hurdles and triple jump. Also for McCallie, Julian Nunally won the shot put, Aaron Dunn won the pole vault and the 4x800 relay team placed first. Jamaal Calvin was second in the long jump. The final results were not complete until after Friday night's press deadline, with several events still unofficial.

• KNOXVILLE -- Bryan College senior Bryson Harper finished third with a school-record 9:10:45 in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Sea Ray Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee this weekend, and he was fifth in the 1500 showcase event at 3:53.56. Freshman teammate Connor Hatfield was fourth in the steeplechase at 9:20.23, and Bryan assistant coach and former standout Josh Bradley was fourth in the 800 at 1:52.13. Juniors Jason McLeod and Drew Thompson were ninth in the 10,000 and 5,000, respectively, in a school-record 31:23.85 and 15:14.50, and Anthony Simpson was 14th in the 10k.

FOOTBALL

• Tennessee Titans radio play-by-play announcer Mike Keith will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without. Keith, who lived part of his boyhood in Chattanooga, is in his 14th season as "The Voice of the Titans." In addition to calling games, he hosts coach Mike Munchak's radio show and the "Titans All Access" television show, emcees all official Titans events, sets up the annual Titans caravan and speaks often throughout the state and beyond. In 2010, Sports Illustrated included Keith's description of the January 2000 "Music City Miracle" as one of the top 30 radio calls in American sports history. He has been honored as Tennessee Sportscaster of the Year nine times in the last 12 years and has won the Edward R. Murrow Award for nationwide excellence.

• The Chattanooga Generals will begin their inaugural American Indoor Football season this coming Saturday at 7 p.m. at Camp Jordan Arena against the Chattahoochee Valley Vipers. The Generals' schedule as an AIF affiliate member has grown to seven games, and assistant general manager Rick Butler has taken over as head coach since the team's formation was announced.

BASEBALL

• Former Red Bank High School pitcher Hunter Adkins from Signal Mountain got the win in Middle Tennessee State's 12-10 victory Friday against Troy and Sun Belt Conference preseason pitcher of the year Tyler Ray, and the final score is no reflection of Adkins' success. He allowed only five hits and three earned runs and struck out eight batters in seven innings, leaving the game with a 12-4 lead. His 2012 record is 5-3.

• Former Lookout Valley High School and Cleveland State standout Lance Rorex went 7-for-9 with six RBIs and four runs scored as Carson-Newman beat Newberry 12-4 and 7-6 in South Atlantic Conference baseball Saturday at Jefferson City, Tenn. Rorex, a senior, hit his first two Carson-Newman homers and drove in four runs in the second game; his second homer ended it.

VOLLEYBALL

• The UTC volleyball team will play its second annual alumni match today at 3 p.m. at Maclellan Gym. Before that, starting at 1, UTC coach Travis Filar and his assistants will host a free clinic for area coaches from middle school and YMCA programs up through high school and college teams. "We will be sharing what we are doing from a defensive standpoint, philosophically," Filar said.

LACROSSE

• DANVILLE, Ky. -- The Sewanee women's lacrosse team pulled out a 19-18 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win Saturday at Centre. Molly Arnold and Caitlin-Jean Juricic scored four goals apiece, Meg Welton had three goals and two assists, and Page Carpenter and Olivia Vietor also had three goals each for the Tigers (8-4, 2-1). Chattanoogans Sarah Mastey and Audrey Powers had four and two goals, Mastey with two assists, for the Colonels (11-4, 2-1).

GOLF

• Senior Nick Carden from Baylor School was one of two King College men's golfers making the Conference Carolinas academic all-conference team for the sport for 2011-12. The Bristol, Tenn., school had four women's golfers honored.
