Shot cab driver dies, suspect’s charges upgraded to murder

A cab driver shot Wednesday evening on Ocoee Street has died, Chattanooga police say.

Nathan Deere, 32, had been in Erlanger hospital since the shooting, which took place about 6 p.m. He died this evening, Chattanooga police spokesman Officer Nathan Hartwig said.

Earlier today, police arrested Christopher C. Padgett, 18, in connection with the shooting. Originally charged with attempted first-degree murder, his charge have been upgraded to first-degree murder, Hartwig said.

Padgett also is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated robbery and unlawful possession of a weapon, police say.
