Chattanooga Christian soccer coach Shawn Brower told Clark Marshall that a goal against rival Notre Dame would take away the pain of Marshall's recent slump.

Marshall surely slept as a happy man Friday night.

The lanky 6-foot-5 forward scored in the second half, and the third-ranked Chargers claimed the regular-season District 7-A/AA championship with a 1-0 victory over the fourth-ranked Irish at CCS.

In the 46th minute, Taylor Black switched fields to Will Taylor, who beat his defender around the edge along the end line and crossed the ball to Marshall for the goal.

"Both teams came into the match knowing what they had to do," Brower said. "Notre Dame is a strong, organized team, and I thought we played with resolve and stepped up to the challenges."

The Chargers (10-2-1, 3-0-1) dominated possession at points of the match while Notre Dame struggled to maintain possession when it had opportunities. The hosts spent the later stages of the first half firing attempts from all angles at Irish goalkeeper John Hoffer, who was able to deflect a pair of opportunities, swat a couple of others firmly away and maintain an imposing presence in the box.

The barrage continued in the second half, even after Marshall's goal. Carson Whitmire, who had some opportunities in the first half, had two other attempts in the second, including one that glanced off the side post and another shot on a free kick that was saved by Hoffer ranging to his left.

The Irish's best opportunity came on a second-half free kick by William DeBarge. They were hurt by the loss of Wes Blanton early in the match to an arm injury.

"I thought we had good effort tonight, but we didn't click," Notre Dame coach Jim Schermerhorn said. "We worked hard, but I thought we could have played better."
