Lady Mocs romp twice

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- There was plenty of offense to go around for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team Saturday. The Lady Mocs had 26 hits in 10 innings in beating Samford 9-0 and 14-0 in a Southern Conference doubleheader.

UTC improved to 30-14, 13-2 in the SoCon, but the hightlight of the afternoon was designated player Michelle Fuzzard reaching another career milestone.

The fifth-year senior from Huntington Beach, Calif., went 4-for-4 in the first game with a home run, three runs scored and four RBIs to push her over the 200-RBI mark for her career. She reset her school and SoCon records at 203, and she leads the league in 2012 with a .445 batting average.

Fuzzard entered the week ranked sixth in NCAA Division I in on-base percentage, and she's second in the nation in doubles per game.

Right fielder Stephanie Rieck, shortstop Jessica Traxler and third baseman Sarah Beth Roberts each had two hits in the opening game, and Roberts had three RBIs.

Freshman pitcher Taylor Deason struck out five batters in 4 1/3 innings to pick up the win in game one. The victory was her league-high 17th of the season.

Traxler, Vivian Morimoto and first baseman Kasey Tydingco hit home runs in the second game, while second baseman Ninjja Suetsugu and left fielder Layne Rainey each had three hits against the Bulldogs (11-33, 4-13).

Fuzzard was held hitless in the second game although she drew a walk and scored a run, but she contributed in the pitching circle by throwing a three-hit shutout for her 13th win of the season.

The teams will wrap up their weekend series today with a single game starting at 2 p.m. EDT.
