The Mountaineers are on a historic trek to compete with the best high school golf teams in Georgia.

North Murray won the Region 7-AA boys' championship Tuesday at Fields Ferry Golf Club in Calhoun and will be in the state tournament May 7 at Waynesboro Country Club outside Augusta.

"We were heartbroken the last couple years, so to come out on top and to know what that means for our school is pretty cool," said Mountaineers coach Keith Robinette, who has been with the team since its inception in the spring of 2010. "It's pretty dang good."

The Mountaineers' Brandon Parrish earned medalist honors with a 1-over-par 73. Teammate Colby Hipp finished second with a 74. Ryan Ensley added a 78, and Tanner West contributed an 87.

"This is our first trip to state in school history," Robinette said. "As a matter of fact, this is the first region championship in our county.

"It's special for our school. Just last week our soccer team won our first region championship in any sport."

Armuchee earned the second invitation to the Class AA state tournament by beating Rockmart in a sudden-death playoff that lasted three holes after they tied for second at 331.

Dade County finished at 332, and Calhoun was fifth at 334.
