Hamilton County Commissioners signaled their support today for the school board’s recommendation to seek an architect for a new East Brainerd Elementary.
The architect will study the former David Brainerd School site, which sits on about 20 acres. The commission voted last March to buy the site on Igou Gap Road for $3.4 million. It currently houses East Brainerd’s fourth and fifth grades.
Commissioners Chester Bankston, Greg Beck, Tim Boyd, Jim Fields and Larry Henry preliminarily voted to start the architectural search. An official vote will be taken next Wednesday.
Commissioners Joe Graham, Warren Mackey, Mitch McClure and Fred Skillern said they will oppose it.
Superintendent Rick Smith and Assistant Superintendent Gary Waters brought the proposal to commissioners.
