Ask a Doctor: What can be done to improve loose, sagging skin?

Q: I have a lot of loose, sagging skin at the front of my neck under my chin. What can be done to improve the appearance of this area?

A: This is a common problem that results from excess skin, fat, laxity of neck muscles or a combination of these factors. The traditional treatment consists of a face/neck lift in order to address all areas of concern. Other less invasive options for treatment include liposuction, laser treatment or a more limited neck lift performed through a small incision. These treatments are performed as an outpatient and under monitored IV sedation for maximum comfort and safety. The type of procedure that is right for you will depend on your skin elasticity, amount of fatty tissue and degree of muscle laxity. If you have questions about your personal options, you should seek consultation with an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon.
