Hamilton County election tally error leads to recount; Gardenhire total revised

An uploading error in Thursday night’s ballot counting omitted ballots for five candidates, including state Senate District 10 candidate Todd Gardenhire in the Eastdale precinct, Hamilton County Election Commission Chairman Mike Walden said today.

As a result, Gardenhire now has 25 more Hamilton County votes than the 6,178 reported by the election commission Thursday night. His opponent, Greg Vital, had 5,394. District-wide, only 15 votes separated the primary opponents — 7,995 for Gardenhire vs. 7,980 for Vital.

“We are in the process of re-uploading the cards again. This was caught internally,” Walden told reporters and candidates gathered at the election commission offices off Amnicola Highway.

"The results didn't change," Walden said.

Other candidates whose Hamilton County vote totals changed were Democrat Quenston Coleman, 32 votes; Democrat Dr. Mary Headrick, 139; Republican Ron Bhalla, 3; and Democrat Tommie Brown, 69.

The regularly scheduled election audit should be finished by this afternoon and a final, but unofficial vote count should be available then, he said.
