Massengale in state bowling hall

Frank Massengale of Hixson was inducted last weekend into the Tennessee State Bowling Hall of Fame. The ceremony was held at the North River Civic Center behind Northgate Mall. Massengale, a 47-year-old employee of Key's Carpet Center in East Ridge, has rolled 109 sanctioned 300 games and 91 800 series with a high of 877, both among the highest totals in United States history. He already was in two local halls of fame. "It's a great honor in itself," Massengale said of the state induction, "and even more so because of some guys I know who are great bowlers who are already in." He cited a 2011 inductee, Mike Ransom of Columbia, and Nashvillians Terry Taylor and Wayne Ezell among that group. "I bowled with Wayne and Terry in the late [19]80s and early '90s," Massengale said. "Terry is the only Tennessee bowler who has won a singles title in a USBC national tournament."

• LISLE, Ill. — Hugh Enicks of Signal Mountain, the Red Bank High School track coach, was second in his 50-54 age group in the 10,000-meter run Saturday at the USATF Masters national meet in this Chicago suburb. That was his second runner-up finish in two days, following the 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday. Enicks, who turns 53 a week from Monday, finished the 10k in 36 minutes, 51 seconds, and he and winner Daniel Barrington of Massachusetts lapped everyone except the third-place finisher. "I'm happy. I was ranked something like seventh going in, and the heat was brutal. It was 90 degrees on the track," Enicks said. "We were battling, but he finally took it from me. That's a tough double -- the 3,000 steeple and less than 24 hours later running the 10,000."

Golf

• Former Baylor School golfers Michael Morrison of Roswell, Ga., and Carlton Forrester of Atlanta will join six area residents among the 140 players competing Monday at St. Ives Country Club in Duluth, Ga., for nine spots in the 2012 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. Two alternate positions also will be at stake in the qualifier for the Sept. 8-13 national event at Lake Forest, Ill. Also in Monday's field are Steve Johnson of Lookout Mountain, Tom Schreiner of Chattanooga, Richard Spangler and Chris Schmidt of Hixson, David Noll Jr. of Dalton and Robson Copenhaver of Scottsboro, Ala.

• University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football coach Russ Huesman will be the speaker at the monthly UTC Mocs Club meeting Tuesday in the Hall of Fame Room of McKenzie Arena. The meeting is set to start with refreshments at 6:30 p.m.
