Investigators disucss the scene of a fatal shooting in front of 222 Tunnel Blvd. on Sunday morning. Witnesses said the victim, Darrell Tremel Lane, was walking down Tunnel Boulevard when a man pulled up in a silver hatchback vehicle and shot him multiple times.

It was a frightful noise that summoned a 62-year-old woman from her bedroom as she was getting ready for church around 8 a.m. Sunday.

"I heard voices," said the woman, who wouldn't give her name out of fear of retaliation. "Then I heard what sounded like four gunshots."

The woman went to the front of her house to peek out a window and saw a man with gunshot wounds running south in the 200 block of Tunnel Boulevard.

"That's when I called 911," the woman said. "He was shot."

The witness saw him collapse in the driveway of a house. The small section of a picturesque neighborhood features neat homes and landscaped yards.

"He was breathing," she said. "That's the first time I've ever seen anything like that -- to see someone take their last breath. I hate that happened."

Chattanooga police spent much of the day trying to identify the man, who was found with no identification. Sunday afternoon, they said he was 29-year-old Darrell Tremel Lane.

He was clad all in white and wearing high-top sneakers. He had a tattoo with the name "Demarcus" on one arm, police said.

Another neighbor also watched the events unfold. She also asked for anonymity for fear of retaliation.

The 51-year-old woman said she heard five or six gunshots. She said she watched what appeared to be a smoky-gray Dodge Caliber with a hatchback back up as the man stumbled and collapsed in the driveway.

She also went to call 911. As she turned back, her partner witnessed the vehicle stop and someone inside open fire on the man a second time.

"It's Sunday morning, waking up, and you're watching a kid get murdered outside your front door," the woman said.

Chattanooga police responded at 8:23 a.m., Master Patrol Officer Nathan Hartwig said at the scene Sunday morning.

Investigators said Lane was targeted in the shooting, but Hartwig could not provide any more details.

Hamilton County records show Lane had been arrested 46 times, most recently in 2009. His charges included theft, various drug counts including crack cocaine, and a variety of traffic offenses.

As of Sunday afternoon, no arrests had been made. The slaying marks the city's 12th homicide of the year.
