The First Tee of Chattanooga is holding a golf carnival Aug. 16-18 at its facility on Hickory Valley Road.
The First Tee of Chattanooga Shootout is designed to increase interest in the sport and the nationally recognized program for young golfers. It will feature a two-man six-hole scramble with several flights. There will be qualifying for $1 million, $100,000 and $5,000 shootouts. There also will be representatives from Ping, Cleveland Golf, Cobra, Mizuno, Nike, Tour Edge, TaylorMade, Callaway and Scratch Golf (with a daily giveaway) for a demo day.
"I don't think anything like it has been done before for a charity event," event coordinator Chase Deck said. "We're trying to give as many reasons as possible for folks of all interests in golf out to the facility and interested in the game."

Honors hosting Junior Classic
The CDGA Chattanooga Junior Classic is set for today and Thursday at The Honors Course. Semifinal matches pit Chase Cole vs. Carson Griffin and John Blevins vs. Conner Caprara in Boys 16-18; Lake Johnson vs. Reese Scobey and Sport Allmond vs. Oliver Simonsen in Boys 14-15; Justin Hickman vs. Elijah Bankhead and Jared Nelson vs. Tyson Venable in Boys 12-13; Mary Melissa Manual vs. Danielle Bates and Katherine Holmes vs. Kaitlyn Sneed in Girls 12-14, and Heidi Barringer vs. Rachel Rebne and Anna Pope vs. Natalie Javadi in Girls 15-18.
Brainerd opening new greens Friday
Brainerd Golf Course is set to begin having golfers play on its new Bermuda greens Friday. The course used temporary greens when new greens were installed in early July. The course also will return to its regular fee rates.
"It's gone better than we really imagined," said Eddie Taylor, the city's director of golf courses. "Whenever you have a major project like this, there are always obstacles for the course and the players. It went as well as it could have. We're excited to be past that construction phase."
Deadline today for Cleveland
Applications for the eighth annual Cleveland Invitational are due this afternoon. The tournament will be played Saturday and Sunday at Cleveland Country Club. More information is available at www.IfYouLikeGolf.com.
Shamblin shines at Pinehurst
Kyndall Shamblin, a third-grader at Prospect Elementary School in Cleveland, tied for second in the 8-year-old girls' division of the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship last week at the famed Pinehurst complex.
Playing nine-hole rounds Thursday through Saturday, Shamblin shot a 112 on the Longleaf course, tying a girl from Scotland. Players from Mexico and Japan were one shot behind; two from Italy and Singapore tied for sixth. Amari Avery of Riverside, Calif., won with a 109.
