Catoosa County Sheriff Phil Summers announced he will endorse Major Gary Sisk as the next sheriff.

Summers, who is retiring at the end of the year after a 22-year career, said he wants to leave the office in the hands of someone he trusts and who is passionate about keeping the community safe.

Sisk is running against former Lookout Mountain Drug Task Force Commander Larry Black in a runoff election on Aug. 21.

Black took the most votes in the primary, but didn’t get 50 percent; Sisk came in second.

“Gary Sisk is someone whom I have grown to trust and respect over the years for many reasons including his professional and competent leadership in law enforcement, his dedication to our community and his strong character,” Summers said.

Black said he expected Summers to endorse his chief deputy, but he still disappointed.

However, he said voters have shown their support for him by giving him 43 percent of the votes in the primary.

“I think the voters have spoken,” he said.
